Goat & POultry Solutions

Many disease conditions in goats look similar but have different etiologies, here we describe the particular condition and its possible causes.

These are the conditions responsible for Abdominal Distention –

Bloat - Fat necrosis (rectum or colon) - Grain overload - Hypocalcemia - Intestinal obstruction - Obesity - Obstructive urolithiasis - Pelvic mass - Peritonitis - Pregnancy - Rupture of urinary bladder.

Probable causes of abortions in goats

Early abortions - Drugs (diazepam, xylazine, acepromazine) – Nutrition- Progesterone Deficiency - Toxoplasma

Late abortionsBovine viral diarrhea (BVD) - Brucella - Campylobacter - Caprine herpesvirus - Chlamydia - Copper deficiency - Corticosteroids - Drugs - Foot and mouth disease - Leptospirosis - Levamisolee - Listeria - Malnutrition - Mycoplasma - Phenothiazine - Q fever - Salmonella - Selenium deficiency Stress - Toxic plants - Toxoplasmosis - Vitamin A deficiency - Yersinia

Probable causes of alopecia in goats (loss of hairs)

Chorioptic mange - Dermatophilosis - Dermatophytosis - Gastrointestinal parasites - Iodine deficiency (Mimosine Poisoning) - Lice - Meningeal worm - Strongylus - Sarcoptic mange - Staphylococcus dermatitis - Vitamin A deficiency - Vitamin D deficiency - Vitamin E deficiency - Zinc deficiency

Anestrus in Goats (disturbed estrus cycle)

Heat stress - Luteal cysts - Malnutrition - Heavily lactating does - Outside of normal breeding season - Poor footing - Poor heat detection - Post partum period - Pregnancy - Pseudohermaphrodite – Pyometra

Anorexia  (off feeding)

Bloat - Blue Tongue - Grain engorgement / Acidosis - Hypocalcemia / hypomagnesemia - Mastitis - Pasteurellosis – Polio encephalomalacia  / thiamine deficiency - Pregnancy toxemia / Ketosis

Ascites / Pleural Effusion / Peripheral Edema

Cor pulmonale* - Gastrointestinal malabsorption - Heart problems - Hemodilution - High altitude disease - Kidney disease § Amyloidosis § Glomerulonephritis - Liver disease - Lymphatic obstruction - Monensin / Lasalocid toxicity - Pleuritis - Starvation - Thrombophlebitis - Urolithiasis—rupture

*Cor pulmonale is defined as an alteration in the structure and function of the right ventricle (RV) of the heart caused by a primary disorder of the respiratory system. Pulmonary hypertension is often the common link between lung dysfunction and the heart in cor pulmonale.

Arthritis / Joint Swelling

Caprine arthritis and encephalitis virus (CAE) - Chlamydia - Epiphysitis - Joint ill (E.coli) - Mycoplasma—polyarthritis - Septicemia - Traumatic arthritis - Vitamin D deficiency

Ataxia

- Bacterial meningoencephalitis - Brain abscess - Bromide - Caprine arthritis and encephalitis virus (CAEV)* - Caprine encephalomyelomalacia - Clostridium perfringens - Copper deficiency - Cowdriosis / Heartwater - Enzootic ataxia - Hypocalcemia - Hypomagnesemia - Insecticides (levamisole) - Lead toxicity - Listeria - Lumbosacral abscess - Lymphosarcoma - Milk fever - Parasite migration - - Plant toxins (milkweed, larkspur, loco, selenium, rye grass, bermuda grass, palm, cyanide, nitrates, oxalates) - Polioencephalomalacia / thiamine deficiency – Polyradiculoneruitis - Rabies - Salt toxicity - Scrapie – Tetanus - Tick paralysis - Urea toxicity - Vitamin D deficiency

* In a recent study conducted in CIRG, Farah, shown that CAEV antibodies are circulating in Indian goats and disease prevalence in the goat herds is influenced by many risk factors
